I truly believe in dressing the part. I remember meeting with a friend at a local restaurant for lunch when I was in transition looking for a new job and planning the foundation for my business. The lunch meeting was the only reason I was leaving the house that day, but I decided to look as professional as if I had been working for my dream job. My friend S. saw me, complimented my look, and asked if I had been somewhere particular. I laughed and said no, and explained that knowing the degrees of separation in Rhode Island, I had to assume that the odds of meeting a potential employer/client, although slim, could be just as good. Plus, not having a job didn't mean I needed to look like I didn't have one.
No clear sign of future job interview/appointment that day however I was introduced to someone I had longed to connect and network with. The real joy came seven months later when this same person, a non-profit CEO, contacted me about my styling services and became a client.
As you navigate that transition one job application at a time or planting the seeds for that business dream, feeling good both inside and out is key. For me, it was also a time where I felt particularly vulnerable and keeping my confidence in check was just as important. I hope you make time for long walks (with baby in the stroller if you have a little one); that you stay inspired every day (there are great life-coaching blogs out there; my favorite ones are CaroleAnnPenney.com and MelaniMarx.com); and dress like the ambitious self that you are!
With that in mind, I put together five classy, and yet practical outfits for the next networking event you plan to attend or your next lunch meet with a friend. One outfit post a day over the next five days to inspire you the next time you step out!
